volvement as we move toward Countdown Centennial - 1996.

WELCOME TO HOMECOMING '90!

Our 23rd Gathering of the Oakwood Family

Your support of Oakwood College through the
years has done much to enhance the growth and suc-
cess of our alma mater. We express our thanks and
appreciation to you for the many positive things you
have done in helping our youth obtain Christian higher
education. May we always remember our purpose for

being, our Christian pride of O.C. and to keep our promise to Adventist Black

youth.

ELDER LEE A. PASCHAL

President

National Alumni Association

Welcome to Homecoming VO!

I extend to you a cordial and warm welcome
to the 23rd Annual Alumni Homecoming.

Instantly as you arrive and greet one
another, it is a time of great fellowship. Ours is
a close knit family, and as the song says, "It feels
so good, just being here again." As we assem-
ble for Homecoming we expect that God will
manifest His presence among us in a blessed
way, making these times especially riche.

My hopes and prayers are that this three
day event will live up to your expectations, and
that you will become a part of Oakwood's tomor-
row by investing in our Black youth today with your prayers, concern, and finan-
cial support. Remember that we at Oakwood have "Purpose - Pride - Promise.'

Dear Homecoming Participant:

Allow me to express special greetings to you
and sound a sincere note of thanks to a merci-
ful Saviour who has graced us to come together
again. Beverly Preston, Beverly Johnson, our
energetic and delightful contingent of student
workers, and I have experienced much pleas-
ure in serving you since July 1989 - and we
are excited over the opportunity to serve you
on our special weekend.

Enjoy yourselves and remember that by
uniting our efforts we shall keep our college
strong and functioning until we hear the words

FRED A. PULLINS
Director, Alumni Affairs

HOMECOMING at OAKWOOD

Some say you can't go home again,
I don't believe that is true.
For we have come back home again,
to the school that once we knew.

To our blessed, dear old O.C.
To Alabama's red clay,
To church, seminars and vespers
And rare events of the day.

To music so etereal,

That angels bend low to hear

The words and songs of praise to God,

Filling the room with good cheer.

To be a youngster one more time,
To reflect and reminisce.
To renew friendships, meet new folks,
Oakwood's Homecoming is all this.

To see our dear revered teachers,
God has blessed them, everyone.
Praise, thank and glorify our God,
His Holy Spirit and Son.

Forty plus years have come and gone,
We have lived this day to see,
Clear are the mem'ries that endure,
Let us ever thankful be!

Oakwood, our dear, dear, old Oakwood,
You're unique, one of a kind.
You always strive for excellence,
As you train heart, hand and mind.

Henrietta Granderson Jackson

Class of 1950

Dedicated to Aunt Sarah

We came so many years ago
To this place where loveliness,
Her grand old house in beauty keeps
In pure love and tenderness.

Yes, we missed Mom's good home cooking
Were so homesick for awhile,
But then we got right in the groove,
And the tears turned to a smile.

A place the Lord above has blessed
With beauty, yes, and with lore,
Ellen White saw this special place,
Saw it here in days of yore.

We would never change the struggle,
We worked very hard you see,
To get the grades, and pay the fees,
Tuition's never been free.

But we would do it all again,
No, we wouldn't change one thing.
For here we learned to live and love,
And glorify God, our King.

Oakwood, God bless and God keep you,
Yes, forever and a day.
We your children, sons and daughters,
Owe more than we can repay!

OCTOGENARIAN CITATION

ELDER I. A. CHRISTIAN

Ivan A. Christian, the only child of the
late Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Christian, was not
born an Adventist; but as Moses of old,
was adopted by another family. This
Yankee family (Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Shaw)
of the village of Pelham, New York in
Westchester County, was quite devoted
to him.

His parenthood leads back to the
days of the late Elder J. K. Humphrey,
who was pastor of the church in New York
City in the early 20's. His mother, after join-
ing this church in Harlem, was urged to
send him to Oakwood Manual Training
School, later named Oakwood Junior Col-
lege in the year 1920.

After graduating in 1924, he was immediately called to New Orleans, Louisiana
where he served as principal and teacher of the church school there. He continued
studying at Xavier University and later received his B.S. Degree in Jacksonville, Florida
from Edward Waters College.

During his labors, he continued graduate studies at Emmanuel Missionary College,
now known as Andrews University and also at Loma Linda University in his pursuit
of the M.A. Degree.

Being called to serve when the "laborers were few", Elder Christian served in vari-
ous capacities: in three Union Conferences; namely, Southern, South-western, and
Columbia Union.

He served as Pastor-Teacher in Lexington, Kentucky very soon after he did Evan-
gelistic work in Berea, Kentucky and built a church and started a church school in that
community. Shortly after, he was called to Memphis, Tennessee where he served as
Principal-Teacher of the school there from which sprang the noble efforts of Dr. E. Rogers,
who was trained early in that school.

Just across the Mississippi River, he received a call to labor in Little Rock, Arkan-
sas where he pastored the church there and held an effort of Evangelism in North Little
Rock, Arkansas. Upon recommendations of the late Elders Coopwood and M. M. Young,
Sr., Christian was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1936. He started the first church
school in Little Rock, Arkansas.

From Little Rock he served in Shreveport, Louisiana building the church and as

Director of Literature Evangelists of the then known Arkansas-Louisiana Conference.

A few years later, he was transferred to San Antonio, Texas as Pastor and there
another church school was established.

He was invited to serve in the Potomac Conference as Principal of Union Academy
in Washington, D.C. in early 1 941 . He labored in Jacksonville, Florida and finally retired
in Savannah, Georgia where he served for ten years as Principal of Ramah SDA Junior
Academy. While retired, he is still active, assisting at the church in Brunswick, Georgia
and serving on the School Board in Savannah, Georgia. He is also engaged as Presi-
dent of the Anna Knight Chapter of Oakwood Alumni Association and serves as Chaplain
of the National Alumni Association of Oakwood College.

He resides in Savannah, Georgia with his wife, Lottie, and enjoys visits from his
son, Joseph Christian (also a graduate of Oakwood) who lives in Chicago; and his daugh-
ter, Sallie Lowe, of Hyattsville, Maryland; granddaughter, Monica Lowe who attended
Oakwood College in 1989, but this year is attending CUC.

He is grateful to his Heavenly Father for having let him still experience the fellow-
ship of Christian workers and his hope and earnest desire is to do all he can to help
finish the great task that is set before us. Finally, when the great Master Teacher comes
back the second time, we will be ready to go back with Him and live eternally with Jesus.

ELDER A. R. CARETIIERS, HOUSTON, TEXAS

Elder A. R. Carethers was born in Rock-
dale, Texas, December 1 , 1909 to Richard and
Mimia Carethers. He has been a member of
the Seventh-day Adventist Church since 1932.
After graduating from high school, he entered
Oakwood Coliege and graduated in 1939. He
is married to the former Erma Lee Jones. Af-
ter graduating from college, he was hired by
the Texas Conference of Seventh-day Adven
list for eight years before the Regional Confer- W

ence was organized in the Southwest. After the :|j : ;?:;. |

formation of the Southwest Region Conference,
he pastored and organized new churches in
Texas and Arkansas. In 1950, he was called
to serve as Conference Treasurer, Home Missionary and Sabbath School Secretary.
After returning to the field, he labored to set up churches in the dark counties of the
states of Texas and Arkansas. He retired after forty years of loyal and dedicated serv-
ice in the gospel ministry, only to realize that a soldier of God can never officially retire
from the gospel ministry. Since retirement, Elder Carethers has assisted in pastoring
and training young ministers in the gospel work.

Recognizing his significant contributions to the advancement of Christian Educa-
tion, the Bellfort Seventh-day Adventist Church, of Houston, Texas, named their church
school A. R. Carethers Junior Academy in his honor. The Academy proudly bears his
name as it serves the Metroplex.

Elder Carethers received the Certificate of Merit Award on March 25, 1978, for his
contributions to Christian Education and his service to the church and community. He
has received many awards and honors throughout his career as a dedicated soldier
of the cross.

Scores of souls have been won by the labor of Elder Carethers during his 49 years
plus of gospel ministry. His dedication and faithfulness to service distinguishes him from
the ordinary citizen. His words of wisdom to the young is "to pursue a christian educa-
tion and seek ye first the kingdom of God." He said if he had to do it all over again,
he would choose, OAKWOOD COLLEGE!

Alumnua of the Year

ETHEL L. BRADFORD

Ethel L. Bradford (nee McKenzie) attended elementary and high school in Jack-
sonville, Florida. She graduated from Oakwood College in 1946 with an associate degree
in Secretarial Science and accepted the position of secretary to the president of the
newly organized South Atlantic Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists.

In 1948, she married Charles E. Bradford, a pastor, whose ministry took them to
the states of Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, New York, Illinois and the District of Columbia
area. During these years, she served as administrative secretary in local conference
offices with the exception of two years at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Loui-
siana and two years with the Federal Housing Administration in St. Louis, Missouri.

A strong supporter of Oakwood College, she was an active member and dedicated
worker in the various Oakwood College Alumni Associations where she lived. This desire
to see students enrolled at Oakwood College was the motivation for her participation
in a recent fundraising program which added substantially to the Endowment Fund
of the Greater Washington, D.C. Oakwood College Alumni Association.

In addition to her duties as administrative secretary and wife of the president of the
Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America, she enjoys sewing and music. The
Bradford's have three children — Sharon, Charles, and Dwight, and two grandchildren,
Marquita Bradford and James Lewis, III.

Mr. & Mrs. Robert Darville, natives of Miami and Gainsville, Florida, were baptized
as pre-teens, influenced by their Seventh-day Adventists parents and a small but excel-
lent church school in Miami.

Robert and Udell met at Ephesus Church, New York City; married; and became
the parents of 5 children. They educated them all in Christian schools and were instru-
mental in developing a church school in their home church, Bethesda, Long Island.
They willingly served on school boards as members, chairpersons, Home and School
Leaders, etc. Mr. Darville was cited by the public school system in Wyandanch, L.I. for
9 years of outstanding service on the school board as vice president and trustee.

Udell and Robert are both registered nurses. Robert attained a B.S. Degree and
worked as nurse administrator at Pilgrim State Hospital. Udell, an Oakwood alumna,
holds both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree and is employed as a nurse clinician
for the Department of Mental Hygiene.

Both Udell and Robert are active members of the A. Samuel Rashford Chapter of
the Oakwood College Alumni Association and are also active in their church.

Mr. Darville now serves as Chairman of the School Board, Sabbath School teacher,
Elder at Bethesda, Church historian, and heads the "Program to Feed Folk."

Mrs. Darville serves as Educational Secretary, Choir member, Sabbath School Super-
intendent, Family Life Coordinator, Personal Ministries Secretary, and Vice Chairperson
of the Wyandanch Home and Property Development Corporation. Together Robert and
Udell run an Adult Proprietary Home, Family Style.

Udell is a School Board Member in Wyandanch Public Schools, a Member of Na-
tional Caucus of Black School Board Members, and on the Nassau-Suffolk Health System
Agency Board.

Each year the Darvilles unofficially recruit students for Oakwood. Last year they in-
fluenced 15-20 students to attend their alma mater. Mrs. Darville escorts a bus of public
school seniors to Oakwood for College Days annually. All the Darville children attended
church school, graduated, and went on to Oakwood College.

Cheryl, the eldest, graduated from Oakwood, received a B.S. Degree in Elementary
Education. She taught in both church and public school and is presently teaching in
the Los Angeles, California public school system.

Wayne graduated from Oakwood, Summa Cum Lauda, with a triple major: Biology,
Chemistry, and Zoology. He finished Southern Florida Medical School and is a Pediatri-
cian in Atlanta, Georgia.

Michelle graduated from Oakwood College majoring in Chemistry. She taught science
at Lynwood Academy; went back to school and graduated from the University of Southern

FELLOW LABORERS AND FRIENDS, each year this gathering is more
enjoyable and richer in meaning for all of us. The halls of 0AKW00D have em-
braced our children and our children's children. She now stands ready to put
her mark upon the next generation, a mark of excellence and character. We salute
the world-wide OAKWOOD family on this occasion. For it is this network of
believers and witnesses that sustains the OAKWOOD legend.

To the Proud cadre of faculty and staff who have served us over the years, and
to the honorable men and women who have left these hallowed grounds for fields
of service around the world and hallowed those posts with their blood, sweat,

And to our children, we take this occasion to say, "GO FOR IT! WE BELIEVE

ELDER I. A. CHRISTIAN

HUMANITY AT ITS BEST

V^ynce in an age, God sends to us someone who believes in us and is willing
to share our beliefs and dreams. Someone who is willing to deny self and be-
come totally involved with our cares and problems. Someone who looks not at
what we were, but someone who accepts us as we are and envisions what we
can become by the grace of God.

It is you that we salute and thank for the many years of dedication, determi-
nation, and devotion in presenting Christ to us. We have witnessed a glimpse
of the Master in your daily living, and we have been drawn closer to Him as a
result of your fidelity.

As needed raindrops freshen the earth, you came along with a needed fresh-
ness that springs us into a better way of living.

May God richly bless you as you continue to be the sunshine that adds spar-
kle and joy to our lives.

The Year of
ynamic Products

During 1990 you will see a number
of new books and materials focusing
on Black Heritage, personalities,
issues, and soul-winning techniques.

You can expect most of these
products to be released during the
General Conference session
(July 6-15) in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Here are some of the things to look
forward to:

• Known authors such as

E. E. Cleveland, Don King, Richard
Neil, DeWitt Williams, C. B. Rock,
Delbert Baker, and many more will
be available to autograph books and
to talk with.

• New books about Black leaders:

The Wit and Wisdom of Charles Bradford

Gifted Hands: The Inspiring Story of
Dr. Benjamin Carson

•A historic one-of-a-kind book,
Profiles of Service (first in a series),
that will contain 150 inspiring and
motivational profiles of current
Adventists who are making unique
contributions to the church and
society.

Produced and selected by the Caucus
of Black SDA Administrators
(compilers and interviewers:
Delbert W. Baker, MESSAGE
Magazine, and DeWitt Williams,
General Conference), this special
profile book will provide an
invaluable resource of Black talent,
expertise, and inspiration.

All these products, services, and
many more will be available at the
Black Caucus booth, the MESSAGE
magazine booth, and the ABC— all to
be located at the Hoosier Dome

BAGBY'S PLACE

Is a very small business and due to the size of it,

it reminds me of a poem I once read:

"One Little Rose"

I would rather have one little rose - the garden of a friend
than to have the choicest flowers.
When my stay on earth must end. I would rather have one pleasant word
In kindnesss said to me Than flattery when My heart is still and life has ceased to be.

I would rather have a loving smile - From friends I know are true

Than tears shed around my casket when this world I've bid adieu.

Bring me all your flowers today - whether pink, or white, or red;

I'd rather have one blossom now - Than a truckload when I'm dead.

We the family of RUTH C. BAKER would like to congratulate
her as being a recipient of the Certificate of Merit Award. It has

She is responsible for providing her son, Vernon K. Williams an op-

MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO

Dr. and Mrs. Otis B. Edwards

TO THEE OUR DEAR OAKWOOD

CHORUS: To thee our dear Oakwood
To thee we shall ever sing
For decades thou has stood
Thy name shall ever ring,
Here we spend our happy days.
And we love to sing thy praise.
And where-ever we may be,
We will always be true to thee,
Our worthy old, old O.C.

1.
Our dear Oakwood within those vale
Thy standards will not fail,
Our "hearts are filled with wondrous cheer
When thoughts of thee draw near,
We love thy pines, thy elms, thy oaks
And campus always green,
The many flowers and distant mounts,
Form one impressive scene.

2.

From states afar and isles of sea

Thy students come to thee,

And fain do linger in thy halls

Enlightened truthfully

From nature's scenes they ever learn,

And study from thy soil,

Till many more thy works discern,

We'll pray for thee and toil.

As happy birds come in the spring

And sing not for their pay,

Rich, natural melodies they bring

Cheering thruout the day.

We too, will serve thee faithfully

In all we do and say.

We hope in God, we trust in thee

True and loyal we'll be.
